Connecting the Dots

It can be tricky to pull off polka dots.  Don't get me wrong, I think they are a fun print to wear, but I also find myself praying to God that I don't look like a clown whenever I wear them!  When approaching the notion of rockin' "the dots," I like to make sure that I have different size polka dots, to break up the monotony of the pattern.

As most of you probably know, I live in California, and our weather really affects my OOTD.  Luckily, this vintage silk blouse, playful floral joggers (they have pockets!  I <3 pockets!), polka dot coat, and sky-high wedges were the perfect ensamble for the evening, especially because it was a little chilly out.

I remember walking into my office one day donning a black and white, polka dot, button-down blouse.  As soon as my co-worker saw my attire that day, she instantly praised me on having the "courage" to wear the pattern.  "Oh, I'm afraid I wouldn't look right wearing polka dots.  I feel like a kid as soon as I put them on," I recall her saying.

I guess we both have a slight phobia of coming across childish while sporting theses adorable circles.  Here's a tip:  if you don't want to feel like a toddler (or clown), keep your silhouette modern and your polka dots fairly small.  If you favor larger dots, be sure to keep the rest of your outfit streamlined and classic.  As with any pattern, the larger and more bold your print is, the less forgiving it will be on your figure.

Finally, don't be afraid to mix it up!  By pairing a polka dot blouse with a monochromatic blazer, you can ease your way into the pattern and ensure that, regardless of the size of your print, your ensemble is on point!
