It's amazing how life goes. I've had my fashion blog now for almost 4 months now and let me tell you...IT'S ALOT OF WORK!!! But it's a labor of LOVE. It can feel like crazy love sometimes ( you know that kind of love that you break up with, you guys argue, make up then do it all over again next week? yea, kind of like that!) I think people have a major misconception when it comes to fashion blogging, it's defiantly not for the faint of heart. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from wanting to be a fashion blogger but too keep it 100% real, if you don't have the time, support, equipment and passion to keep your blog/website alive, it makes things nearly impossible to be successful. Let me just break down the realness for you. In order to play the fashion blogger game, you have to:
1.) Find a photographer: Now would be a good time to whip out your wallet. Nowadays, finding a photographer to take your pictures for free or in exchange for the images is very rare. They have to eat just like we do and doing free work just won't cut it. Hopefully you have boyfriend or family member to take your pictures. Some fashion bloggers set their cameras to auto timer and shoot themselves, which is a great idea because it costs you nothing and your in charge of how your images comes out.
2.) Scout for locations to shoot: This takes time (and gas!!) 'Nuff said.
3.) Buy the equipment: Camera, laptop, photoshop, lights, memory cards, lenses,...etc. Believe me, the list can long!
4.) Find the Clothes and Accessories: 98% of my clothes/ pieces are thrifted, so guess what, that means I spend A LOT of time thrifting!!! But I LOVE doing this for you guys because I believe you don't have to spend tons of money to look amazing! My goal is to make sure every woman, no matter the size, race, or tax bracket, can feel amazing and confident in the clothes they wear.
5.) Keep yourself motivated: Let's face it, you won't see a major following when you first start out. You have to work your way to the top just like you would in any other profession. You have to get use to the empty comment sections for MONTHS on top of MONTHS...the nagging questions that swirl in the back of your head: "Are people paying attention?". "Do they like the looks I'm putting tougher?" Fashion bloggers may seem like the most confident people in the world but that's in FRONT of the camera. We have mastered the skill of doing our thing when the camera lights is flashing, but when that Cannon T5i shuts off and the shoot is over, were human just like you!
6.) Stay Consistent: "You mean to tell me I have to go through this drama of shooting and putting together an outfit from head -to- toe AT LEAST once a week!!!???" Yup. That exactly what I'm telling you. Consistency is everything when it comes to blogging. I have a once a week schedule, which works perfect for me, but there are some fashion bloggers who post almost everyday! I don't know how they do it without going insane! I noticed that my one time a week schedule allows me to put quality over quantity.
7.) Stay organized: "Hmmmm...let's see...did I say I was going to meet with the photographer next Tuesday or Wednesday? Did we say to meet up time was 3:00 or 3:30?" I cannot express how important it is to stay on top of everything when you're running a fashion blog! Being careless about your project is a sure way to watch it slowly crash and burn. There is nothing worse than forgetting to purchase a new memory card for your camera on shoot day or failing to remember where you put that statement necklace that goes perfect with that outfit! Write.down.everything!
8.) Be a pretty good writer: When it comes to blogging, there is an old saying that goes " Content is King". Although I personally feel like fashion bloggers can slack just a little in the writing department, as long as there pictures come out amazing! But you still have to engage your readers and add some kind of value to their lives, be it information, a positive emotion, or inspiration from one of your photos. As long as they get something out of it, you have done your job and you have done it successfully!
9.) Be confident: There are some days I don't like the way my hair looks. Somedays I'm not feeling my makeup, but I still have to put my best foot forward and get it done. I have to be confident in my styling abilities and know that despite not feeling my hair or makeup, my audience will still enjoy the look I put together. Is this easy to do? Someday's yes and someday's no, but it's your confidence that get's you to the finish line.
10.) Sacrifice: When the girls are out partying there butts off, guess what, you can't go because you have writers block and have to post the next day! Sometimes a scheduled shoot day will fall on the same day of your cousin's baby-shower, or your nephew's graduation party or a close friend's bachelorette party. Sometimes your sweetheart just wants to have a "Netflix and chill night" but your up late editing, researching, commenting, replying to emails, etc. Yup, Sacrifice is necessary my friend. You just have to be a master at balancing the "fashion Blogger" life and your social life. But good luck with that one because being a serious fashion blogger is not a hobby...IT'S A LIFESTYLE!!
So as you can see, fashion blogging can be a handful! It's not easy, but when your really passionate about something, you just roll with the punches. You see the obstacles in life as lessons instead of letting those obstacles defeat you. I don't have much, but what I am incredibly thankful for is the CRAZY LOVE and support I've been getting for everyone while on this fashion blogging journey.
When a strangers walk by during a photoshoot and tell me I look stylish and to "keep pushing" that makes all the difference! I was told that if you just start where you are with what you have the universe will supply you with everything you need to be successful. It WILL show up. And that's exactly what's been happening. I look back and try to figure out how I'm still saying afloat. I'm not ballin', I don't live with my parents ( hello crazy expensive California rent!) nor do I have access to top designer pieces (not yet at least!) but what I do have is the undeniable love and support from everyone around me, and for me, that's priceless!
Side Note: So, this random guys just jumped in my picture (below) during my shoot! He then told me he was proud of me and to keep following my dreams! This is why I love doing what I do!!!! Thank you everyone for your love and support!
